Affair Recovery
An affair can leave a relationship feeling deeply shaken. Trust may be broken, communication may feel impossible, and both partners may be unsure of what comes next.
Affair recovery is not simply about “getting over” what happened. It is a structured process of understanding the impact of the affair, rebuilding trust, reconnecting emotionally, and determining what your relationship can look like moving forward.
Our approach is organized around three phases: Atone, Attune, and Attach. Each phase builds on the one before it, helping couples move from stabilization and repair toward reconnection and a stronger relationship.
Our Approach
1. ATONE
Healing the Wounds & Rebuilding Trust
The first phase focuses on creating safety, honesty, and stability. Rather than rushing toward forgiveness or moving on, we create space to understand the impact of the affair and begin repairing the damage.
Together, we may work on:
-
Creating space for genuine remorse and understanding the hurt that has occurred
-
Establishing transparency and agreements that help rebuild a sense of safety
-
Creating healthy boundaries and ways to honor those agreements
-
Beginning to make sense of what happened and what each partner needs for healing
-
Building the stability needed to move forward
The goal: To create enough safety and trust for healing to begin, without shame or blame.
2. ATTUNE
Reconnecting Emotionally & Learning New Ways to Communicate
Once greater stability has been established, the focus shifts toward the relationship itself. This phase helps partners better understand each other's emotional experiences and develop healthier ways of connecting and responding.
Together, we may work on:
-
Expressing emotions and needs without becoming overwhelmed, defensive, or withdrawn
-
Learning healthier ways to navigate conflict
-
Understanding and working through emotional wounds
-
Recognizing and celebrating positive moments in the relationship
-
Becoming more aware of opportunities for connection
-
Repairing moments when bids for connection are missed
-
Developing greater curiosity and understanding of each other's experiences
The goal: To move beyond simply recovering from the affair and begin feeling emotionally connected again.
3. ATTACH
Creating a New & Stronger Relationship
As trust and emotional connection grow, the focus shifts toward the future. This phase is about intentionally creating a relationship that feels more connected, honest, secure, and meaningful.
Together, we may work on:
-
Creating a shared vision and new meaning for your relationship
-
Establishing rituals of connection in everyday life
-
Developing regular conversations that increase understanding and reduce stress
-
Rebuilding fondness, admiration, appreciation, and gratitude
-
Rebuilding sexual and emotional intimacy at a pace that feels safe for both partners
-
Establishing boundaries and agreements that protect the relationship moving forward
-
Creating regular relationship check-ins, such as a “State of the Union” conversation
The goal: Not simply to return to the relationship you had before the affair, but to intentionally build a healthier and more connected relationship moving forward.
Healing is not always Linear
Affair recovery does not follow a single timeline. Every couple brings a different history, different wounds, and different needs to the process. Partners may also move through the phases at different rates, and new discoveries or triggers may require returning to earlier work.
You do not have to know what comes next before beginning.
Therapy provides a structured and supportive space to process what happened, rebuild trust, reconnect, and determine the future of your relationship together.
